Dublin Zoo..

Just outside the city centre, in the grounds of the Phoenix Park, you will find Dublin Zoo. It is the world's third oldest public zoo. Originally opened in 1830, The Zoological Society of Dublin first displayed animals supplied by London Zoo. Like other zoos of the time, the purpose of the Zoo was more like that of a menagerie, it's role to display as many different kinds of animals as possible for people to see.

During the past 200 years, Dublin Zoo has changed and grown significantly, like other Zoos around the world. Conservation has become the main focus of the Zoo. During the 20th Century the practice of Zoos changed to providing space for breeding, education and study to help prevent extinction of endangered animals.

Dublin Zoo prides itself on its contribution to conservation and has breeding programmes for several highly endangered species. It is part of a worldwide network of zoos working together to save endangered species. Over the years in has been a leader in breathing many species such as, Moluccan Cockatoo, the snow leopard and the Golden Lion Tamarin. Dublin Zoo is also famous for its successful lion-breeding programme.

The Zoo offers visitors a number of different attractions and educational programmes, to ensure an enjoyable and enriching experience. These include: a 'Meet the Keeper' opportunity (a chance to see the animals being fed and talk to their keepers) and an education centre. Some of the attractions include: World of Primates, African Plains, City Farm, Reptile House, Bird House and World of Cats.
