County Fermanagh is part of Ulster and Northern Ireland. It inhabits a part of the island that includes both the Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The magnificent limestone peaks of Mount Belmore are found along the county's boarder with Cavan and Leitrim. It is the most westerly county of the North. Fermanagh's economy relies heavily on tourism and agriculture.
In recent times, Lough Erne has been joined-up with the River Shannon by the Shannon-Erne Waterway Canal, which collectively can boast as being the longest navigable inland waterway in Europe. The original layout of this waterway dates back to the 1850s, but it wasn't until its €30 million restoration in 1994, which included rebuilding thirty-four bridges and sixteen locks, that the waterway saw prosperity.
Enniskillen is the county town of Fermanagh. Located almost precisely in the centre of the county, the town is found right between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. Enniskillen dates back to 1611, with a single curving street. Amongst the many sites of the town is Enniskillen Castle. The Maguire Family first built their stronghold here during the 15th century. Located on the banks of the River Erne, the castle now consists of the original 15th century Keep, the Watergate, a twin turreted building from the 1600s and a heritage centre.
On the boarder with Donegal is the town of Belleek. The town is renowned for its world-famous Belleek Pottery, which was established in 1857. The old production building has now been refurbished and converted into a museum, where visitors can take a guided tour and see the pottery being made. The visitors' centre also boasts a tearoom, a pottery showroom and a theatre that shows a documentary about the company.
