County Galway is the second largest county in the country. It is part of the province of Connacht, in the Republic. Annual events, such as the Galway Races, the Galway Arts festival, and locations such as Connemara and the Aran Islands make Galway one of the most popular destinations in the country.
Galway City is the county town of Galway. A relatively new city (only earning its city status in 1985), it is located on the northern part of Galway Bay, where the River Galway meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is the fourth largest city in the Republic. The area first began to prosper as an Anglo-Norman trading post in the 12th century. Since the 1970s there has be a great effort toward urban renewal of the area. The city itself is quite small and easily negotiable on foot.
Among the sights of the city are: Eyre Square, a lovely park dating back to the 1700s, now surrounded by mainly 19th century architecture; Lynch's Castle, a 16th century town house located on the corner of Shop Street and Abbeygate Street, now converted into a bank; St Nicholas Collegiate Church, an incredible medieval building, home to the Galway town clock since 1898; The Galway Cathedral, built between 1958-65 from Limestone and Marble from the surrounding regions, its dome some 145ft high makes it one of the city skyline's most striking features.
