County Kerry is located in the southwest of Ireland and is part of the province of Munster. The south and west parts of the county are made up of two peninsulas, the Dingle Peninsula and the more southerly Iveragh Peninsula. It is quite a rural county and has one of the lowest urban populations in Ireland. Its diverse scenery and majestic landscape has long made it popular with tourists, attracting somewhere in the region of one million visitors a year. Consequently, tourism has become the area's most important industry.
The Lakes of Killarney, the Ring of Kerry and the Killarney National Park are just some of the county's popular destinations. They offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country as well as being some of the best spots for outdoor activities, with golf, water sports, walking and horse riding all on offer.
Kerry is also home to Ireland's largest mountain in Carrentoohil. Along with the adjoining Magillycuddy's Reeks, the county is the site of the most rugged mountains in Ireland. On a clear day, from the peak of Carrentoohill (some 3409ft high), you can see as far north as Galway Bay. Tralee is the county town of Kerry located at the head of Tralee Bay, where the River Lee meets the sea. The town boasts the Kerry County Museum, a museum and theme park dedicated to the long history and rich heritage of the county. Just outside the town is the 19th century Blennerville Windmill, the largest working mill in the country. The town also plays host to the annual Rose of Tralee International Festival.
