Part of the east midlands, County Kildare is found in the province of Leinster, in the Republic of Ireland. Evidence of the county's ancient history can be seen at Knockaulin, in the Dún Ailinne Hillfort, the largest hillfort in Ireland. It is thought to have been the ancient seat of the Kings of Leinster. Excavations of the site have revealed artefacts dating back as far as the Neolithic and Iron Ages.
Naas is the main town in Kildare. Naas was originally the home of the ancient Kings of Leinster. Located just 20 miles from the Republic's capitol, Dublin, Naas is a town of continued growth. It is one of the main centres for Ireland's famous horse racing legacy. There are three major racecourses located just outside the town: the Curragh, Punchestown and Naas. Also nearby is Mondello Park, Ireland's main motor-racing circuit.
The town of Kildare is located in the west of the county. St Brigid founded a monastery here in the 5th century. This was one of the three most important Critstain sites in Celtic Ireland. There now stands St Brigid's Cathedral on that site, along with the ruins of a 12th century round tower. The area is home to the National Stud and the Horse Museum and, like Naas, it is renowned for its continued contribution to Horse Racing.
