County Kilkenny is part of the province of Leinster, in the Republic of Ireland. It is home to three major rivers, the Suir, the Barrow and the Nore. These rivers have impacted dramatically on the history, industry and layout of the county. It is a prosperous farming county, with a third of its farmland dedicated to tillage crops.
Killkenny is also the name of the county's main town. It is situated on the River Nore. Kilkenny is one of the most famous and important heritage towns in Ireland. It has its origins in an early Christian settlement involving St Canice. The town really took shape in the 13th century and became the medieval capitol of Ireland. The Butler's, an Anglo-Norman family, took power in the late 14th century, where they remained until the late 1800s. The impact of their time in power is obvious in the city's many historic buildings and public spaces.
The town is now a hub of tourism and culture, with sites such as: Kilkenny Castle, which dates back to the 1190s; St Canice's Cathedral, a 13th century Gothic style hilltop cathedral; Black Abby, a 13th century Dominican abbey, no a monastery; Kilkenny Design Centre, a world-renowned design centre, with tours available. It is also home to some of the finest shopping, pubs and dining in the country.
