County Leitrim is part of the province of Connacht, in the Republic of Ireland. It has the smallest population of any county in Ireland. The county is epitomised by its vast Limestone region in the north and its poorly drained Drumlin region in the south. Though mostly and inland county, Leitrim has a small amount of Atlantic coastline, Ireland's shortest coastline; a mere two miles located near the town of Bundoran. The River Shannon and Lough Allen form a dividing line between north and south Leitrim.
Carrick-On-Shannon is the main town in Leitrim. It is located on the boarder with County Roscommon and on the River Shannon. The town boasts a number of harbours and marinas and has a long boating history - it is said to be the cruising Capitol of Ireland. It is the smallest county town in the country (indeed, the first traffic lights in County Leitrim were installed in Carrick-on-Shannon in 2003!).
Country Leitrim contains many sites of historical significance, including: Corracloona Tomb, a megalithic structure with a rectangular chamber and a large stone blocking its entrance; Parke's Castle, dating back to the 17th century Plantation, the castle is located on the banks of Lough Gill; Costello Chapel, the smallest chapel in the country, it dates back to the late 19th century; Tullaghan Stone Cross, thought to have once been a part of a monastery, this cross dates back to the 9th century.
