County Limerick is part of the province of Munster, in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland. It is a county with a rich agricultural legacy, mainly focused on dairy farming. East limerick, along parts of Counties Tipperary and Cork, form what is known as the 'Golden Vale' and contains some of the richest, most fertile farmland on the island. This farming tradition dates back to the Neolithic Period.
Limerick is the main city of the county. It is located at the head of the Shannon Estuary and is the lowest bridging point on the River. The city's origins date back to 922, to a Norse settlement, on what is known as King's Island. Limerick is a cathedral city, with many medieval remains, including part of St Mary's Cathedral, a protestant house of worship, and the 13th century King's Castle. There is also a Catholic cathedral, St John's, that dates back to the late 19th century.
With nearly half of Limerick city's population aged 29 or under, it is a young and growing city. It currently boasts three third level educational institutes, the University of Limerick, the Institute of Technology and the College of Education. Further to this, the recent renewal of the city's quays and the opening of the nearby Shannon International Airport make Limerick an area of growth and prosperity and an increasingly popular tourism, education and business Hub.
