County Offaly is part of Leinster and is located in a part of the Republic known as the 'Central Plain'. Established as 'King's County' in 1556, after it had been planted by the British. The county town, Tullamore, was at this time called Philipstown, after King Philip. Tullamore is the biggest town outside of Dublin on the Grand Canal. The town is home to the must-see Charleville Forest Castle, a beautiful gothic structure surrounded by Ireland's most ancient oak woods. The castle is currently undergoing major renovations and is open to the public.
Elsewhere in the county, the Slieve Bloom Mountains rise quite unexpectedly from the more flat midlands. They are a low range of mountains found on the boarder with County Laois. The Slieve Bloom Way is a designated 30 kilometre trail, offering visitors unspoilt views of the areas open vistas, deep wooded glens and mountain streams.
The Bog of Allen in the east of the county is a raised bog land area. Bog land covers about 15 per cent of land in Ireland, indeed the country is home to some of the largest bogs in Europe. Raised bogs are characteristic of the midlands, none more notable than the Bog of Allen. The use of peat from the bogs for fertilizer and fuel has greatly reduced their size throughout the country.
