Tyrone is the largest county in Northern Ireland and part of the province of Ulster. The county originated as part of Tír Eoghain, more than a thousand years ago. It remained in the possession of the Uí Néill family through the middle ages. The Uí Néills were the ruling family throughout the northern part of Ireland from the 7th to the 12th century. The present day layout and settlement in the county dates back to the 17th century plantation of the area. Omagh is the county town of Tyrone.

Tyrone is home to the Ulster-American Folk Park, located just outside Omagh. It is an outdoor theme park that documents the history and culture of the migrant population of Ulster, who set out for America in the 18th and 19th centuries. It looks into the backdrop and events that led to some two million people to depart from the province for North America. The park consists of collection of thirty odd buildings, some originals and some replicas, including: settler homes, a schoolhouse, a forge and a church. The tours are guide led, with the guides playing the part of the people of the time.

The county contains some fine historical sites, including: Stone Age ruins, early Christian sites, holy wells and ruined abbeys. Benburb Valley Park is home to the ruins of Benburb Castle and offers beautiful walks along the River Blackwater. The Tyrone Crystal factory, which dates back to the 18th century, has a visitors centre and offers tours of its work areas.
