Wexford is a county in the southeast of the Republic and part of the province of Leinster. The county is known for its two major rivers, the Barrow and the Slaney, and its two main mountain ranges The Blackstairs and the South Wicklow Mountains. It has a great tillage farming tradition, whose main crops are sugar beat, barley and wheat. Wexford also boasts the largest ferry port in Ireland at Rosslare, offering connections to France and Wales.
Wexford town is the main town in the county and is located at the mouth of the River Slaney, in Wexford Harbour. The town has a rich history, its origins dating back to a Viking settlement in the 9th century. It was the site of the first Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169. The town has a 12th century Augustinian monastery, Selskar Abbey. Wexford town square, the Bull Ring, was the site of a Massacre by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. The town was the site of a failed insurrection in 1798. Much of the town's most notable architecture dates to the 19th century.
The Irish National Heritage Park is an open-air museum, located at Ferrycarrig north of Wexford town. It offers the visitor a unique look at some 9000 years of Irish history and heritage over the course of a guided tour. The tour trail spans some thirty-five acres of land. With replicas of crannogs, ringforts, Viking houses, mills and many other pieces of historical note, the museum offers and accurate look at Ireland's rich past.
